At our Friday morning meeting, we were pleased to be joined by Cedric Nwafor, founder of Roots Africa. Cedric talked about the program, Change Maker Program, which trains youth to teach farmers new agricultural skills. This is part of a hunger-fighting initiative. We were also joined by some of the students in the program who spoke about their work. Thank you, Cedric Nwafor, for speaking with us.

As you may know, World Polio Day is coming up, and to celebrate we are having a Pints for Polio night at the Celtic Corner in Dartmouth. The event will take place on Tuesday, the 25th of October 2022, from 5pm-9pm, and operate as a drop in. Moosehead has generously come on as a sponsor, and will be donating $1 from every pint of Moosehead Lager draught sold that night to Polio Plus!
Beatles Fest is now ONE MONTH away! We are still looking for a few volunteers to help before and during the event. Ticket sales are planned to start on Monday. Keep an eye on social media and emails about the details. For more information or to volunteer, please reach out to Alex Handyside.
Our club will be handing out Christmas hampers again this year. Hampers are filled with items to enjoy the holiday season for needy families. The club is looking to members for a donation of items and volunteers to help pack/deliver the hampers a week before Christmas. For more information, to donate items, or to volunteer, please reach out to Bob Power.
Update: We want to expand the Christmas hampers beyond Spryfield to Uniacke Square. If you have any connections in the area, please reach out to Bob.
This is a reminder to members that we are still planning to offer some assistance to an Afghan family arriving in the Halifax Area. The family of eight (five girls, one boy) aged 2-13 are currently in Pakistan. While this is not a financial ask of the club or its members, this family will need help settling in and becoming part of our community. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to Dave Kowlessar.
We are happy to say the PALS program is beginning to ramp up at Joseph Howe School with seven volunteers. We want to remind members that they are welcome to take part in the program and the literacy program. Being a part of the program does require a commitment to come to the school every Tuesday from 08:30-10:15 to help the students. There would also be a need for a criminal/child abuse registry check. If you are interested or would like to learn more about the PALS program, please reach out to Adrienne Malloy.
Our club is recommitting to youth exchange for the 2023-2024 school year. To be able to allow a local student to study abroad and to welcome an international student to NS, we need host families. We like to provide the student with 2-4 host families over the school year. We CAN NOT commit to a student until we know we have host families in the queue.
We have created a social WhatsApp chat room for members. What's a WhatsApp? WhatsApp is an app you can download on your phone and use to chat with friends and family. We have created a private chat room for members to chat socially with each other. Just click on the WhatsApp logo near the top of the newsletter or here.
