We are very pleased to welcome and introduce Renato Domingues to our club!
Renato hails from São Paulo, Brazil. In 1985, at the age of 14, he was the founder of the Interact Club in the city of Ribeirão Pires, greater São Paulo. In 2009 he joined the Rotary Club Praia, in the city of Balneário Camboriú, province of Santa Catarina. Renato has been an active lawyer since 1997, always an advocate for social causes, such as projects to protect victims of sexual and domestic violence in universities and indigenous tribes in Brazil - and a long-distance lawyer to this day. In addition to law, he has been an elementary and high school teacher for more than 30 years.
We are very pleased to welcome and introduce Rafael Chiaraba to our club!
Rafael Chiaraba was born in São Paulo, Brazil and emigrated to Canada in 2019. For over 10 years, Rafael has worked as a lawyer and consultant. He was always dedicated and engaged in promoting the philosophy of Cooperativism, as well as always seeking to participate in social projects with São Paulo and Sorocaba Barristers’ Society. Currently, in Canada, after a few years of adaptation and a few months as a guest of this club, Rafael says, "it is a great honour to be able to join this group of incredible people and that we must contribute to the good of people and to the good of our community which welcomed me and which I feel a part of."
Our club was happy to hear from Claudia Chender, Nova Scotia MLA for Dartmouth South, and leader of the Nova Scotia New Democrat Party. Claudia talked about some of the challenges impacting Nova Scotians and took questions from members.
At our Friday morning breakfast meeting, we take the time to introduce and recognize Rotary Clubs from around the world.
This week we recognize the Rotary Club of Banchory-Ternan. The town of Banchory (pop 7,650 in 2016) lies on the north side of the River Dee, some 18 miles west of Aberdeen, Europe's oil capital. Originally settled in the 5-6th centuries at the confluence of the River Feugh, the site became the location of the annual St Ternan Fair during the middle ages. The town flourished with the arrival of the Deeside Railway line in 1853 and became a popular destination for both holidaymakers and day-trippers from Aberdeen. During the 1970-90s the town expanded as a result of the oil boom and is currently undergoing a new period of growth. There is a range of shops, hotels, restaurants, garages and local services.
In lieu of a regular Friday breakfast meeting on September 30th, 2022, we would like to invite members to participate in Truth and Reconciliation Day activities. If you know of any events this day, please reach out to Jillian. We will be sharing these details closer to the date. More to come!
Sally gave an update at our Friday morning meeting about ShelterBox. They have arrived on the ground in Pakistan. About 33 million people have been affected by the floods. ShelterBox is providing tents, water filters, water carriers, mosquito nets. and solar lights. As winter comes, they will also be providing blankets and sleeping mats.
Our club, and Rotary in general, have been supports of ShelterBox for many years. To learn more and to give, visit https://www.shelterboxcanada.org/.
Did you know many of our members volunteer to make sandwiches for Joe Howe Elementary students?
Our club is a supporter of the Joe Howe Elementary school food program. This means more than just buying snacks, but also making thousands of sandwiches! If you want to learn more or have some time to help out, please reach out to Tom O'Handley.
Alida gave the club an update during our Friday morning meeting. The very popular Rotary Youth Exchange program is back up and running. Five inbound youth have made it to Nova Scotia this year.
Stella Roy has returned from the Life Below Water Symposium in Burmuda. Stella gave a brief recap of the event and mentioned that many of the presentations and videos from the symposium are available on the Zones 28 & 32 website.
Zone 28 & 32 is hosting a training session in Toronto on September 21-24 called Learning to Lead. We are very fortunate to see some of our members (Jillian and Mike) going for training. It's also impressive to see fellow members being involved at the Zone level. Louisa and Chris will be at the event to give training and Stella is the registrar for the event.
We don't always hear much about the "Zones". They are the level of governance above the district level that provides guidance and training to districts and clubs. Our district (7815) is in Zone 28. To learn more about Zone 28 you can visit their website or Facebook page.
Assemblies are an important time to talk about the club, our vision, and brainstorm ideas for the future. Assemblies are less about day-to-day business and more about club strategy. Potential members may find assemblies valuable and are welcome.
Our next club assembly will be on September 28 @ 6PM at the Westin Nova Scotian Lunenburg Room. Everyone is invited to the Seaport Social (hotel bar) for an informal social opportunity following the assembly.
We host our AGM in the late fall (November - December), where we nominate officers and board members for the following Rotary year (July 2023 - June 2024). A formal message will be sent to members about nominations, plus nominations can be made at the AGM. If you are interested in learning more or developing Rotary leadership experience, please keep an eye out for more information, or contact Jillian.
The Metro Halifax Rotary Clubs are hosting a Pints for Polio night at the Celtic Corner in Dartmouth on October 26. For every Moosehead sold, $1 will be donated to the Polio Fund.
More details to come. Please reach out to Ashley Butt for more details.
