At our Friday Morning meeting, we had a presentation from Ashley Butt about the Rotary Foundation. November is Foundation month, and members must be aware of the Foundation's vital work. Stella also provided an update on the End Polio Now campaign. You can watch the presentation here around the 00:34 mark. For more information, please reach out to Ashley Butt. If you are interested in giving once or setting up a recurring give, please visit https://www.rotary.org/en/about-rotary/rotary-foundation
Members are reminded that recorded presentations may only be available for a few months. Therefore, members must request recorded presentations to be preserved longer.
At our Friday morning breakfast meeting, we take the time to introduce and recognize Rotary Clubs from around the world.
This week we recognize Duarte Rotary Club. On September 30th they celebrated the 30th anniversary of women in Rotary and the first woman in Rotary, Doctor Sylvia Whitlock. When Dr. Whitlock joined the club Rotary International revoked its charter in 1978. However, they continued on with a black X through the Rotary logo and used the tagline, "The Ex-Rotary Club of Duarte". Their charter was reinstated in 1986. It was noticed that before women joined Rotary there was relatively high turnover in Rotary clubs, but since women were allowed to join, turnover decreased, a fact Duarte Rotary Club made clear to RI.
Please let Tom O'Handley know if you are able to make 25 sandwiches (individually wrapped, any kind) and drop them off at Souls Harbour on 5568 Cunard St anytime between 9:00am - 3:30pm on Thursday, Nov 3rd or between 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Friday, Nov 4th. Souls Harbour is also accepting bags of apples and oranges, bananas, so if you can't make sandwiches, fruit is an option as well! The sandwiches (and fruit) will be served for lunch on Nov 4th.
Our club will be handing out Christmas hampers again this year. Hampers are filled with items to enjoy the holiday season for needy families. The club is looking to members for a donation of items and volunteers to help pack/deliver the hampers a week before Christmas. For more information, to donate items, or to volunteer, please reach out to Bob Power.
We are happy to share that Dave Kowlessar will join the board and lead our local service initiatives. While Dave may be a new face to some, he comes with years of Rotary experience at the former Harbourside club and in Trinidad. He has president, secretary, and treasurer experience. Welcome, Dave!
Want to know more about cybercrime? Join Rotary Club of Sackville & Area Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 pm in person at Freemans on Sackville Dr. at 6:00 pm or on Zoom. S/Sgt. Royce MacRae of the RCMP Technological Crimes Unit, NS, will be talking about cybercrime.
Giving Tuesday is the world's largest generosity movement. This Giving Tuesday (November 29th) the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbour is asking you to Stock the Box. To fill life saving emergency disaster relief supplies. To provide a home and a fresh start for families all round the world.
We wanted to let members know that our district governor, Harvey Bass, will be in the HRM area on the weekend of November 26 & 27. No further details are available, but we will keep updating members.
Normally when you join a Zoom call, your microphone and video will activate automatically based on your settings. Unfortunately, we have seen a few situations where folks have joined and were unaware their mics were not on mute. Therefore, effective immediately, our Friday morning meetings will mute everyone joining the meeting. You can unmute at any time.
We are pleased to share that the club has invested in some point-of-sale (POS) technology to accept credit/debit cards. Initially, the POS will be used during Beatles Fest, but after we can explore ways to use it for other purposes. We have chosen Square for its low cost and ease of use. The POS can be used for more than accepting forms of payment but also as a sales record. The POS can record what we sell and who we sell it to. Plus, the technology can connect to Sage, our accounting software.
This is a reminder to members that we are still planning to offer some assistance to an Afghan family arriving in the Halifax Area. The family of eight (five girls, one boy) aged 2-13 are currently in Pakistan. While this is not a financial ask of the club or its members, this family will need help settling in and becoming part of our community. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to Dave Kowlessar.
Our club is recommitting to youth exchange for the 2023-2024 school year. To be able to allow a local student to study abroad and to welcome an international student to NS, we need host families. We like to provide the student with 2-4 host families over the school year. We CAN NOT commit to a student until we know we have host families in the queue.
We have created a social WhatsApp chat room for members. What's a WhatsApp? WhatsApp is an app you can download on your phone and use to chat with friends and family.
