What is Rotary Youth Exchange?
The Rotary Youth Exchange Program provides students aged 15-19 the opportunity to experience new cultures, build lifelong friendships, and develop leadership skills through international exchanges. Whether as inbound students (hosted by local Rotary Clubs) or outbound students (traveling abroad), these young ambassadors foster global understanding and goodwill, all while immersing themselves in new languages, customs, and communities.
For Rotary Halifax Harbour and our fellow clubs in District 7815, supporting Youth Exchange is a way to invest in the next generation of leaders—helping students develop a broader perspective on the world while making an impact locally and internationally.
A Weekend of Connection and Community
Thursday: The students arrived and wasted no time getting to know one another over pizza and icebreaker games. Despite Halifax being in the grip of a polar vortex, they bundled up and enjoyed an evening of ice skating at The Oval—where they nearly had the entire rink to themselves!
Friday: The students led the Rotary Halifax Harbour meeting, sharing their exchange experiences and reflecting on what the program has meant to them. Afterward, they headed to Joe Howe School, where they engaged with students of all ages—answering questions, sharing stories from their home countries, and sparking curiosity about the world beyond Canada’s borders. Of course, playing in the snow at recess was a highlight for all!
Saturday & Sunday: The adventure continues! Plans include a visit to Africville to learn about Halifax’s Black history, a group dinner, and some fun at mini-putt. On Sunday, the students will take part in training sessions and wrap up the weekend with a potluck with local Rotarians.
Building Bridges Across Borders
The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is more than just travel—it’s about building friendships, breaking down barriers, and creating future leaders who will make a difference in their communities and beyond. This weekend in Halifax was a perfect example of how Rotary empowers young people to become global citizens while making a meaningful local impact.
