This past weekend, members of Rotary Halifax Harbour’s Environmental Committee took a deep dive into what happens to our waste after it leaves the curb. The group toured the Otter Lake Waste Facility and the Recycling Facility in Bayers Lake for an eye-opening look at Halifax’s waste management system.

Instead of the “dump” many of us imagined, parts of Otter Lake looked more like a rolling green landscape straight out of a Microsoft XP background. Behind the scenes, we learned how waste is carefully managed and how much material is being diverted away from landfills to protect our environment. At the Bayers Lake Materials Recovery Facility, we saw firsthand the process of sorting and preparing recyclables to be transformed into new products.

Why this matters 🌱

This wasn’t just a field trip—it was part of Rotary’s commitment to Environmental Sustainability, one of Rotary International’s official Areas of Focus. By educating ourselves on local environmental issues, we’re better equipped to:

  • Understand how our everyday actions affect the planet.

  • Support community efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling.

  • Inspire future projects that align with Rotary’s vision for a cleaner, healthier world.

A big thank you 🙌

Special thanks to Danielle and the Environmental Committee for organizing this educational opportunity. And a heartfelt thank-you to the HRM staff, who were incredible tour guides—sharing their knowledge, answering questions, and helping us see the bigger picture of how Halifax manages its waste and recycling.

There’s already talk of an encore visit, and it’s clear our members left with a new appreciation for how Halifax handles trash and recycling. At Rotary, we’re proud to keep learning, growing, and working together toward solutions that protect our planet for future generations.
