On Friday, January 9, Rotary Halifax Harbour was proud to present a $5,000 sponsorship to the Terranaut Club, a local organization creating meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for youth across the Maritimes.
In the photo above, Danielle Quinn of the Terranaut Club accepts the cheque from our club secretary, Peter Skakum. It was a great opportunity to connect with an organization whose work aligns so closely with Rotary’s commitment to youth and education.
What is STEM — and Why It Matters
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. These fields play a critical role in shaping everything from environmental protection and healthcare to innovation and future job opportunities.
The Terranaut Club helps make STEM approachable and engaging by taking learning out of the classroom and into the real world. Their programs focus on hands-on experiences like marine biology, wildlife conservation, environmental science, and sustainability—showing young people how science connects directly to the world around them.
Creating Opportunity for Young People
The Terranaut Club delivers programs for girls and gender-diverse youth aged 9–18, with a strong emphasis on accessibility. Programs range from day-long workshops to multi-day outdoor camps and are offered free or on a pay-what-you-can basis, helping remove financial barriers for families.
Beyond academic learning, the Terranaut Club builds confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging—especially in fields where many young people have not traditionally seen themselves represented.
A Natural Fit for Rotary
Supporting youth education is a core part of Rotary’s mission. At the club level, we look for opportunities that create lasting, positive impact in our community. This sponsorship is a great example of that commitment in action.
Terranaut Club’s work supports not only learning, but leadership, environmental stewardship, and long-term community well-being—values that strongly reflect Rotary’s own.
Looking Ahead
We’re excited to support Terranaut Club as they continue to grow their programming and reach even more youth in the years ahead. We can’t wait to see the great things this organization continues to do, and we’re proud to play a small part in helping make it possible.
