This past weekend, Rotary Halifax Harbour demonstrated the power of community and generosity by assembling and delivering 100 Christmas Hampers to families and individuals in need across Halifax.

The hampers, packed with essential food items, are a vital resource for those experiencing food insecurity during the holiday season. This year’s effort will bring comfort to over 500 people, a testament to the growing need in our community.

Growing to Meet the Need

The Christmas Hamper program has expanded significantly over the past few years—from 20 hampers two years ago, to 40 last year, and now an incredible 100 hampers this year. While this growth is a source of pride, it also highlights the increasing challenges many face in accessing basic necessities.

Community Partners Make It Possible

The success of this initiative is due in large part to the support of incredible community partners:

  • Dylan’s No Frills in Spryfield played a crucial role by organizing and supplying over 1.5 tons of food items, ensuring every hamper was filled with essentials.
  • The Westin Nova Scotian generously provided a space in the Tradewinds Room to assemble the hampers, allowing volunteers to work efficiently in a warm and welcoming environment.

Volunteers in Action

Led by dedicated Rotarians Bob and Denise, and with the support of incredible volunteers, the hampers were carefully packed on Friday. Supplies were then distributed to local organizations such as Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank, Adsum House, Elizabeth Fry Society, and the North End Community Association.

Due to inclement weather, 75 hampers were delivered to these organizations for distribution, while 13 Rotarians and their families personally delivered the remaining hampers on Sunday.

Making a Difference

This program is more than just a holiday initiative—it’s about addressing a growing need and bringing comfort to those who need it most. We are grateful to everyone who made this possible, from our partners to the volunteers who lent their time and energy.

The Christmas Hamper program is a shining example of how Rotary Halifax Harbour embodies its motto of Service Above Self. Together, we’re making a meaningful difference in our community.
