At our September 18 meeting, the Rotary Club of Halifax Charitable Trust held its Annual General Meeting. There were financial reports, elections and all the governance that comes with operating a registered Canadian charity.
But the AGM also gave us an opportunity to talk about something much more important: what our Trust makes possible — and how every member can help build it.
For more than 60 years, the Trust has provided a way for Rotarians and supporters to turn personal generosity into charitable impact. Today, we're encouraging members to consider making the Trust part of their own Rotary giving — particularly through a small, regular monthly donation.
You don't need to make a large gift to make a difference. Ten or twenty dollars each month, multiplied across our membership and over many years, can become a significant resource for the communities and causes our Club serves.
A charitable legacy dating back to 1966
The Rotary Club of Halifax Charitable Trust was established by the Rotary Club of Halifax in 1966, receiving its charitable registration the following year. When the Rotary Clubs of Halifax and Halifax Harbourside came together in 2021 to create the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbour, the Trust became part of our new Club's legacy.
Today, it remains a registered Canadian charity with its own legal and financial structure, separate from the Club. It can receive eligible charitable gifts, issue official donation receipts, hold and invest charitable assets, and make grants in accordance with its charitable purposes.
In many ways, the Trust is our Club's charitable giving engine.
And every time a member gives to the Trust, they add a little more fuel to that engine.
Why give to the Trust?
There are countless worthwhile charities that deserve our support, including The Rotary Foundation. So what makes giving to our own Trust different?
It is an investment in the charitable work of our Club.
The Club identifies community needs, develops projects and establishes its service priorities. Requests for charitable funding are approved by the Club's Board and brought to the Trust. The Trustees then independently ensure those requests are consistent with the Trust's charitable purposes and Canadian charity requirements.
That means a donation to the Trust isn't directed to one particular project. Instead, you're trusting your fellow Rotarians to identify where our Club can make a meaningful difference and giving them another resource to make that work possible.
For members who already give to The Rotary Foundation, this doesn't need to be an either/or decision. The Foundation gives Rotary enormous capacity to tackle challenges on a national and international scale, while our Trust provides a charitable resource closely connected to the priorities and projects of our own Club.
There is room for both in our Rotary giving.
Small gifts become big Rotary projects
The impact of the Trust isn't theoretical.
Its resources have helped support the Aninga Project, our holiday hamper program, and our partnership helping provide school supplies to every student at Joseph Howe Elementary School. The Trust has also been available when additional charitable funding was needed for Rotary-supported initiatives.
Those projects are a good reminder of what happens when individual contributions are brought together.
A $10 monthly donation might not feel like it can accomplish very much on its own. But that's $120 a year. If 25 members did the same, that's $3,000. If 50 did, that's $6,000.
And because the Trust is designed to be a long-term charitable resource, today's donations can support both the work we're doing now and our ability to take on larger opportunities in the future.
Building something for the next generation of our Club
At this year's AGM, Trustees reported $116,333.06 in assets at June 30, 2026. During the year, the Trust received $14,450 in donation revenue and recorded $5,319 in expenses.
The goal isn't simply to accumulate money.
The Trust needs to balance two important responsibilities: putting money to work today and protecting a charitable resource for tomorrow.
Trustees can keep appropriate funds invested so they grow over time, while making grants when Club priorities align with the Trust's charitable purposes. That also gives our Club the potential to think bigger — perhaps preparing for a significant project or capital campaign several years into the future.
Regular donations are particularly valuable in that environment. They provide a steady stream of support and, collectively, help us build a stronger foundation for whatever our Club takes on next.
Make the Trust part of your Rotary routine
One of the easiest ways to help is simply to set it and forget it.
Our online giving system allows you to establish an automatic monthly donation by credit card or pre-authorized debit. Eligible donations receive an official charitable tax receipt, and you can manage your recurring gift yourself.
There is no minimum amount that makes someone a “meaningful” donor.
During the AGM discussion, we talked about exactly this point: even $10 a month is a meaningful contribution to the work our Club does.
If your circumstances allow $10, consider $10. If $25, $50 or $100 works for you, wonderful. What matters most is creating the habit of supporting the charitable work we collectively believe in.
Members also suggested some other great traditions: donating your age on your birthday, asking family and friends to make a donation instead of buying another birthday gift, making a gift of publicly traded securities, or considering the Trust as part of your estate planning.

Rotary is built around people pooling their time, talents and resources to accomplish things that would be difficult to do individually.
Our Trust works on exactly the same principle.
No single $10 monthly donation buys school supplies for an entire school or funds an international project. But hundreds of individual gifts, accumulated and responsibly managed over time, give our Club the ability to say yes when opportunities to make a difference arise.
So, as we begin another year for the Rotary Club of Halifax Charitable Trust, we're asking members to consider one simple question:
Could you make a small monthly donation part of your Rotary commitment?
Whether it's $10, $25, $50 or another amount that works for you, regular giving helps ensure that the generosity behind our Club's work continues well into the future.
