A dozen committed Rotarians and guests braved the awful traffic, wind and rain to come to the Sobeys Community Room, just as a storm was heading into town.  What a night!  The atmosphere inside however, was joyful and as usual, there were lots of laughs.  We welcomed two guests and heard a Rotary minute about the Foundation.  Adam saved the 50-50 day by quickly getting a new deck of cards at Sobeys to start a new round after Hilary’s big win last Friday.  The pot today was low, and Clarke thought he might win, but no, the pot has started its path to double and triple digits again.
Wednesday, December 7th – Sobeys Mumford Community Room

Neither wind, nor rain, nor dark of night...

We heard updates to various projects – Gerry and others are heading to the DR in January and will be working on the garden and other projects.  We made a donation to the district’s school bus project in the Cameroon.  The HRM Presidents and Secretaries are meeting to discuss potential collaborative signature projects.  Our Christmas party is this Friday night and we are looking forward to collecting some toys for Family Service.

We then had fun learning about Christmas traditions in the homes of those around the table – it was interesting to hear how some traditions change as children grow up – and other traditions are expected to stay exactly the same!  Lots of great food stories – giant turkeys, baking cookies with grandchildren, lobster, seafood chowder, tortiere... and we all loved hearing about the week-long food celebrations in Columbia, especially a caramel covered dessert!  I think we can expect a Columbian focused social next year... Maria’s Mom is coming for a visit so she has time to get the recipes.  Barb’s tradition of having a birthday cake for the baby Jesus was a hit too.  Evelina taught us about Mummering in Newfoundland and Adam told us about a tradition with Lebanese roots involving children being given coins from their uncles.  All in all, it was great fun!
