Today's meeting our own Stella Roy, District Governor Elect, shared her experience of traveling to Nigeria in November of 2013 to immunize children against the Polio.

Stella provided a background on Polio and Rotary International, starting with the promise to eradicate the disease in 1985. There were 100 cases a day of Polio in 2009, in 2012 that improved drastically to 3 cases a day.

Stella spoke of her arrival in Nigeria, meeting at the Polio Emergency Operations Center with incredibly brave and passionate workers and how proud she felt to be part of Rotary and this cooperative group of organizations.  Rotary has done great things but without partnerships with UNICEF and the Bill Gates Foundation, just to name a few, this work would not be nearly as successful.

Vaccinations are ordered 6 months in advance from Europe. The health care workers meet in the morning and report on the day's progression in the late afternoon.  Any problems are reported on and corrected within days. The Emergency Operations Committee are extremely efficient in their work and have accomplished tremendous feats in challenging environments.
