This October, Rotary Halifax Harbour is stepping up in the global fight against polio through our #GivePolioTheFinger campaign. You may be familiar with the tradition of marking pinkie fingers with purple dye after a child receives the polio vaccine, signifying protection from this crippling disease. With this campaign, we’re asking our members and supporters to symbolically “give polio the finger”—to take a stand, spread awareness, and rally behind Rotary’s efforts to end polio for good.

Why Polio Vaccines STILL Matter

Polio is a highly infectious disease that primarily affects children under the age of five. Although there is no cure, polio is preventable with vaccines. Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, more than 2.5 billion children have been immunized, reducing cases by 99.9%. What was once a widespread disease affecting hundreds of thousands of children each year is now endemic in a few hot spots.

Despite the incredible progress, we are not done yet. As long as polio exists anywhere in the world, it remains a threat everywhere. Rotary has been at the forefront of the fight against polio, working alongside partners like the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Our work has brought the world closer to eradicating this disease, but we need continued support to cross the finish line.

Rotary’s Impact and Ongoing Work

Rotary has contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to the eradication effort. Through fundraising, immunization campaigns, and advocacy, Rotarians worldwide are making a tangible difference. Here at Rotary Halifax Harbour, we’re proud to be part of this monumental effort. But there’s still work to be done, and we need your help to ensure no child ever suffers from polio again.

How You Can Get Involved

We’re calling on all Rotary members and supporters to spread the word. Share with your friends, family, and networks why Rotary’s work to end polio is so crucial, and help us raise awareness of the continued fight. Use the hashtag #GivePolioTheFinger and #EndPolioNow on social media to share your stories and inspire others to join the cause.

And we’re making it even easier for you to get involved! Send us a picture of yourself holding up your pinkie finger (updates@rotaryhalifaxharbour.ca), and we’ll send back a custom image and video for you to share on your social media. It’s a fun and simple way to show your support and help spread the word.

If you want to make a direct impact, consider donating to the Rotary Foundation, where every dollar brings us closer to a polio-free world.

You can also show your support by joining us at the Pints for Polio fundraiser on October 21, 2024, at Celtic Corner in Dartmouth. For just $25, you’ll enjoy a burger and beer, with $5 of every ticket going directly to Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign. Learn more here.

Together, We Can End Polio

Rotary’s vision is a polio-free world, but we can’t do it alone. By coming together, raising awareness, and supporting our efforts, we can finally give polio the finger and end this disease once and for all. Join us in this fight throughout October and help us make history.
