If you saw our recent announcement about powering Rotary Halifax Harbour’s meetings by stationary bike this April — we have a confession to make:
It was an April Fools’ joke.
There will be no bike-powered projectors, no foot-pedal charging stations, and no Lycra dress code (although honestly… we had you going, didn’t we?).
But while the pedal-power may have been fictional, the reason behind the joke is very real:
April is Environment Month, and Rotary clubs around the world — including ours — are taking meaningful action to protect the planet.
🌍 What Isn’t a Joke
Rotary Halifax Harbour is proud to support environmental initiatives both locally and globally. Here’s what we’re actually doing this month:
🌊 April 22 – Hosting a webinar with Mimi O’Handley from the Ecology Action Centre on coastal challenges in Nova Scotia.
🧹 April 26 – Organizing a community clean-up at the George Dixon Centre.
♻️ April 22, 24 & 26 – Launching a Zero Waste Social Media Challenge to encourage simple, impactful sustainable living tips.
We may not be generating electricity with our calves, but we are generating real momentum for a cleaner, healthier, and more connected community.
🌱 Rotary and the Environment
Rotary made supporting the environment its seventh area of focus in 2021. Since then, clubs around the world have taken action to:
Reforest degraded land
Restore waterways
Provide solar energy in underserved regions
Reduce plastic pollution
Support sustainable agriculture
Educate communities on climate resilience
It’s service above self — with a green mission.
